Funeral costs climb again: average bill now £4,713
A typical UK funeral has gone up by £151 since January, and where you live still makes a big difference.
The average cost of a traditional funeral in the UK has reached £4,713, a rise of 3.3% since the start of the year. That is £151 more than in January, and £90 of the increase has come in the last three months alone, according to research from funeral plan provider Pure Cremation reported by trade title COVER.
The study looked at more than 270 funeral directors across England, Scotland and Wales. It also found a clear postcode effect: the average funeral in London costs £5,898, well ahead of the cheapest region, the North East.
For families, the timing can matter as much as the total. Funeral bills usually arrive within weeks, while an estate can take months to settle, so relatives are often left finding the money in the meantime.
That is one reason people look not just at whether they have life cover, but at how it is held. A policy written in trust can normally pay out to the people you have named without waiting for probate, and the payout usually sits outside your estate for inheritance tax. Whether any of that is right for you depends on your own circumstances.
